Middle Atlas Bulky Singles is a type of yarn used by weavers in Morocco's Middle Atlas Mountains to create pile rugs like the famous Beni Ourain, which is made by artisans from the Beni Ourain tribe who live in the Middle Atlas Mountains southeast of Fes. You can read more about Middle Atlas yarn types in our blog post here.

Our Middle Atlas Bulky Singles is processed and spun by weavers of The Anou Cooperative community. They use carders and long wooden spindlesThe yarn is spun from a woolen preparation and spun with a woolen draft. When they are done, the yarn is slightly abraded resulting in a yarn with a felt-like texture that is soft to the touch. If you would like to see a video of how people spin yarn in the Middle Atlas, click here

The sheep that provide the wool for this line roam freely in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains, so you may find traces of vegetal matter in the yarn like bits of grass or burrs. However, the spinners do their best to remove these items! The yarn base is 100% natural with no chemicals or bleach used in its preparation. In order to safeguard the health of the artisans, our customers, and the environment, only people and planet-friendly products are used to dye this yarn.

Middle Atlas Bulky Singles is perfect for tapestry weaving and rug knotting. In Morocco, Middle Atlas wool is prized for its strength and is known for its ability to produce rugs with minimal shedding.

This bulky yarn is also suitable for accessory and rustic outerwear knitting and crocheting. It results in a knitted fabric with good stitch definition and structure that will keep you warm and dry when worn over a shirt. You can find our free knitting patterns here.
