Our Middle Atlas Wool Yarn is processed and spun by weavers of The Anou Cooperative community. They use carders and long wooden spindles of their own creation to spin a bulky yarn that is used for weaving blankets and rugs. These handmade textiles are essential to surviving the snowy winters in the mountains where the weavers live. The yarn is made from a woolen preparation and spun with a woolen draft. After spinning, it is slightly abraded resulting in a yarn with a felt-like texture that is soft to the touch.

The sheep that provide the wool for this line roam freely on the slopes of Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains, so you may find traces of vegetal matter in the yarn like bits of grass or burrs. However, the spinners do their best to remove these items! The yarn base is 100% natural with no chemicals or bleach used in its preparation. In order to safeguard the health of the artisans, our customers, and the environment, only people and planet-friendly products are used to dye this yarn.

Middle Atlas Wool Yarn is perfect for tapestry weaving and rug knotting. In Morocco, Middle Atlas wool is prized for its strength and known for its ability to produce rugs with minimal shedding.

This bulky yarn is also suitable for accessory and rustic outerwear knitting and crocheting. It results in a knitted fabric with good stitch definition and structure that will keep you warm and dry when worn over a shirt. You can find our free knitting patterns here.
