High Atlas Bulky Singles is a type of yarn used in the High Atlas for weaving pile rugs, of which the Beni Ourain is one type. It is a yarn with moderate twist. The rugs made from High Atlas Bulky Singles are essential to surviving the snowy winters in the mountains.
Our High Atlas Bulky Singles has a soft, rustic feel and could also work very well for chunky knitted outerwear garments worn over a shirt or accessories like bags and baskets. You can find knitting patterns for our yarns here.
The wool for High Atlas Bulky Singles comes from sheep indigenous to the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. These breeds do not exist anywhere else outside of the High Atlas, as they are uniquely adapted to the harsh mountain climate. The sheep roam freely during the day, so you may find traces of vegetal matter in the yarn.
Weavers of The Anou Cooperative community living in the High Atlas process and spin the wool for our High Atlas Bulky Singles. They use carders and long wooden spindles that are supported on the ground as they spin. The yarn is made from a woolen preparation and spun with a woolen draft. After spinning, it is washed, resulting in a yarn with a felt-like texture that is soft to the touch. Because this is a hand spun yarn, variations may occur.
Our High Atlas Bulky Singles yarn base is 100% natural with no chemicals or bleach used in its making. In order to safeguard the health of Anou artisans, our customers, and the environment, only people and planet-friendly products are used to dye this yarn.
